(DNAINFO) Allegra Hobbs | August 18, 2016 — Work on the two-way protected bike lane will begin in late August and continue into September.

The Department of Transportation will start installing a long-awaited two-way bike lane along Chrystie Streetby the end of the month, officials confirmed.

The agency will start work on the new, protected lane between the Manhattan Bridge and Houston Street in late August, with installation continuing into September, according to a department spokesman.

The plan has been more than a year in the making, beginning in March 2015 when elected officials and Community Board 3 representatives called on the DOT to introduce safety improvements to the heavily trafficked thoroughfare, citing an increase in bike ridership within the “severely faded” lanes.
