City Overhauling Stretch of 11th Avenue to Reduce Lincoln Tunnel Traffic

(DNAINFO) Maya Rajamani | April 21, 2017 — The city is converting a stretch of 11th Avenue into a two-way street in an effort to reduce congestion near the Lincoln Tunnel.

The conversion of 11th Avenue between West 34th and 37th streets from one-way to two-way is slated to start on Monday, the Department of Transportation said.

The DOT will also install a left-turn bay for vehicles traveling from eastbound 34th Street to northbound 11th Avenue, as well as adding high-visibility crosswalks at intersections along that stretch.

The project aims to improve Lincoln Tunnel access and traffic flow while reducing congestion in the area, the department said.

Work will take place overnight.

In a letter sent to the department last April, Community Board 4 endorsed the restoration of two-way traffic on the stretch.

“We welcome this change, which will allow Lincoln Tunnel bound traffic to use 11th Avenue as well as 10th,” since the area is “currently overloaded,” the board wrote.
