(CRAINS) Will Bredderman , June 27, 2018 — An unknown political upstart took out a powerhouse Queens congressman Tuesday with a stunning left hook.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old former campaign worker for Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign, shocked the New York and national political establishment by defeating 20-year incumbent Rep. Joseph Crowley—the Queens Democratic Party chairman and the fourth-ranked Democrat in the House.
Crowley, who was considered a top contender to replace Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and perhaps to become House speaker next year, trailed Ocasio-Cortez by 15 points almost the entire night and conceded the primary election on Twitter.
