We knew No Kings Day would be huge, but we never imagined just how big it would be. We turned out over five million people (and still counting) across 2169 events in countries all around the globe.
This is what real democracy looks like.
The people drive the policy, not the other way around. And when the wealthy try to buy their way into unchecked power, we stand up and loudly remind them who runs this country.
The over 200,000 people who turned out in NYC.
The over 100,000 in Philadelphia.
The 400 people who showed up in a town with a population of only 800 in Michigan.
These people are the true backbone of America.
We have loved seeing all of your pictures and videos flood social media over the last 24 hours (stick around to see a few of our favorites at the bottom). If you took any and haven’t posted them yet, we highly encourage you to join in the fun and post on social media with the hashtag: #NoKings.*Bonus* You can search that hashtag on social media sites yourselves to see everyone else’s wonderful posts.
Our biggest takeaway: Our movement is overwhelmingly peaceful, joyous, and committed to a better tomorrow. So what’s next?
Because this fight will be ongoing. In a tragic reminder of the stakes of this movement, Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were victims of a politically-motivated assassination early Saturday morning. And we continue to track the news about a shooting during an event in Salt Lake City. Our hearts are with both communities as they navigate these tragedies. This is the violence we must push back against. This is the hate that our joy must drown out.
Some of you have been a part of this fight for a long time, some of you just began your journey as activists yesterday, but all of us have a future ahead of us joyfully resisting fascism. Today was just one day in that journey, but boy was it an incredibly inspiring one.
