NYC paid $138M over pothole lawsuits: Controller Stringer

July 24, 2024 | John Mudd

(NY DAILY NEWS)   — To help the Department of Transportation better manage pothole repair and cut back on the number of pothole-related claims, the controller’s office compiled the claims data on ClaimStat — a year-old system that shows where and how often claims are made.

City workers are already busy filling potholes — the city spends $10 million to $20 million annually on the task. Since the beginning of the year, the Department of Transportation has filled 366,000 potholes, compared with 373,000 last year at the same point. The agency completed just under 500,000 through all of 2014.
