FEC Against Demolition, Renee Keitt, January 3, 2025

New York, NY — January, 2nd, 2025 — I n a significant and historic vote, tenants of the NYCHA Elliott-Chelsea Houses in Manhattan have elected Renee Keitt as the new President of their Tenants Association, unseating the incumbent. This decisive election is widely seen as a clear rejection of the controversial plan to demolish the 22 buildings that make up the development.

Renee Keitt ran on an anti-demolition platform, advocating for tenant-led solutions and greater community involvement in decision-making. The results of tonight’s vote are a powerful statement from residents who have consistently voiced concerns about the proposed demolition plan.

Speaking after her victory, Keitt stated: “I want to thank the residents of Elliott-Chelsea and the Chelsea Neighbors Coalition for their unwavering support. This victory shows what we can achieve when the community stands together. The fight to save our homes isn’t over—we must continue prioritizing community over profit and stopping the demolition of our homes.”

The demolition plan, proposed by NYCHA in partnership with Related and Essence Development, has faced growing opposition from tenants and community leaders. Keitt’s victory underscores the tenants’ demand for transparency, preservation, and respect for their voices.

This election marks a pivotal moment for the Elliott-Chelsea Houses and for NYCHA tenants across the city who are advocating for meaningful participation in shaping the future of their homes and communities.
