(DNAINFO) James Fanelli and Michael P. Ventura | November 18, 2016 — State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman brought the New York lawsuit in 2013.

President-elect Donald Trump may pay close to $20 million to settle a class action lawsuit filed by state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, DNAinfo New York has learned.

The lawsuit, which was filed in 2013 and alleged that the president-elect defrauded his students by promising them access to his real estate business success secrets and failing to deliver, sought $40 million in damages.

Trump is not required to admit guilt as part of the settlement, a source familiar with the case said.

“As Attorney General Schneiderman has long said, he has always been open to a settlement that fairly compensates the many victims of Trump University who have been waiting years for a resolution,” said Schneiderman spokesman Eric Soufer.

Throughout his campaign, Trump said he never settles lawsuits.

He still faces similar cases in other states, including in California.

News of the settlement was first reported by the Daily News.
