EMERGENCY ACTION THIS WEDNESDAY! COME PACK THE COURT! Chelsea Section 9 tenants have filed a temporary restraining order against NYCHA for allowing development firms Related Companies & Essence Development to knock on residents’ doors & park trailers with representatives tricking residents into signing away their right to their homes. Section 9 Public Housing tenants have also been threatened with legal action if they don’t vacate 2 of their buildings in preparation for the forced demolition of their homes. We need to fight back!
We need too show the judge the overwhelming support for the tenants’ case and that public housing needs to be protected! Bring your friends, family members, co-workers, fellow organizers, etc!
The city, @ebottcher , @essence.development & @relatedcos plan to demolish ALL of the Section 9 public housing in Chelsea. This vacate order for 2 of the buildings would be the first phase of several. They are first targeting Chelsea Addition & Fulton 11. Chelsea Addition is made entirely of senior tenants – some of our most vulnerable community members. They are lying to residents, trying to force them to accept their eviction for the promise of “new, high-amenity” homes, but residents overwhelmingly prefer renovations to existing units.
The city & big developers plan on adding 2450 luxury apartments where Chelsea NYCHA buildings would be demolished! Allowing this to happen would set a dangerous precedent for NYCHA housing in ALL of New York City and increase the cost of living for ALL New Yorkers.
🕰️ 📍 The hearing will be THIS Wednesday 11/5, 10am at 71 Thomas Street, Courtroom 305 in Lower Manhattan!
If you are coming note these entry requirements:
• Bring your government issued I.D. if you are above the age of 16
• No food, beverages, or chewing gum are permitted inside the courtroom.
• Weapons of any kind are not permitted.
• All individuals entering the building are required to proceed through a metal detector and have any bags or personal items screened through an x-ray machine. It is recommended to leave large bags at home.
