New York, NY: NYCHA Tenants from the Fulton and Elliott Chelsea Houses and community allies  will hold a press conference outside the New York County Supreme Court, Civil Branch, on Wednesday October 15th from 1pm to 1:45pm, then proceed inside the courthouse to attend a hearing on the Article 78 case, Weaver v NYCHA. The case asserts that NYCHA and the City have blatantly disregarded the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP), a well-established law triggered when rezonings and development affect an entire neighborhood, or involve significant land use decisions affecting public assets like public housing. 

The Chelsea community will turn out in support of the residents of Fulton and Elliott Chelsea NYCHA Houses, who are facing an imminent threat of relocation by an October 26th deadline. Tenants and neighbors are planning to pack the court and hope that the judge’s ruling will stop the demolition and privatization of public housing in Chelsea. 

Attorneys John Low-Beer and Thomas Hillgardner will be arguing the case.

Updates: Chelsea Public Housing Legal Defense Fund Continues to Raise Money, Evictions Around the Corner, Seniors Adamant to not Move

The fight to save public housing in Chelsea continues to grow, gain momentum and has escalated in the past several weeks. (1) The Chelsea Public Housing Defense Fund has raised over $30K. (2) Multiple protests have been held in front of Councilmember Erik Bottcher’s office and home. (3) Supporters have stepped up their publicity campaign against the demolition. (4) The media has been paying close attention to this fight that has multiple legal strategies. (5) And, numerous Chelsea groups and concerned neighbors have been coming to the aid of the tenants.  

Time is of the essence since elderly residents in the W. 27th Senior Building/Chelsea Addition, as well as tenants in W. 19th Street Fulton Houses, have received the 30-day notice to vacate (the last day being Oct. 26th before evictions begin) — but many refuse to move, refuse demolition, nor do they want their Section 9 federal funding to be converted to Section 8’s private management because rents can increase. Seniors as well as other tenants want repairs and to stay in their homes — an assertion that has been repeated for years — and have been vocal that they will not move due to the insecurity of moving back and the burden of moving apartments. 

The Chelsea Public Housing Coalition is a united group of Fulton and Elliott-Chelsea Houses tenants, Chelsea community members, and local organizations fighting against the unnecessary demolition and privatization of public housing. We believe that preserving public housing that is deeply affordable for low-and moderate-income New Yorkers is crucial to preserving the character and affordability of Chelsea as our neighborhood where we can all thrive.
