NYCHA TENANTS PROTEST PROPOSAL TO DEMOLISH FOUR PUBLIC HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS, GIVE LAND TO DEVELOPERS FOR LUXURY BUILDINGS

Subject: Press Conference Against Demolition of NYCHA Public Housing

Date: Wednesday, February 26, 2025

Time: 9 am

Location: NYC City Hall Steps, 199 Chambers Street, New York City (outside) Ahead of the NYC City Council Public Housing Committee’s Oversight Hearing on Transparency at NYCHA, NYCHA tenants and their allies will protest NYCHA’s proposal to demolish four public housing developments in Manhattan (Fulton, Elliott, Chelsea, and Chelsea Addition), home to 2056 families.

Residents, neighbors and elected officials will speak about the lack of transparency and resident participation in the proposed demolition and construction plans. We will shed light on NYCHA’s plans to concentrate current public housing residents into a handful of new subsidized buildings while giving most of this public land to their development partners to build up to 3000 luxury units. Nearly a thousand residents have signed a petition opposing this proposal.

The last thing Chelsea needs is more luxury housing. Public land must be used for the public good, not for the profits of private developers. Save our homes, save our public housing!

About Elliott-Chelsea Houses: The Elliott-Chelsea Houses, a NYCHA development in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, provide affordable housing to over 2,400 families and individuals. Built between 1945 and 1947, the 1015 apartments complex is known for its strong community ties. The development is home to a diverse population actively advocating for affordability, preservation, and tenant rights amid challenges like aging infrastructure and redevelopment proposals.
