Residents & Community Coalition Protest Demolition of NYCHA Fulton and Elliott Chelsea Campuses
On Thursday, October 10th at 1 PM, Fulton and Elliott Chelsea (FEC) Tenants Against Demolition and Chelsea Neighborhood Coalition (CNC) are hosting a press conference to protest a proposed redevelopment project that will entirely raze both campuses and demolish 2,056 units of legacy housing in 24 buildings, currently home to approximately 5,000 NYCHA residents. The proposed development will eradicate the surrounding recreational open space on both campuses and destroy more than 370 mature trees.
The Chelsea Neighborhood Coalition has gathered over 900 signatures on petitions from NYCHA residents. Coalition leaders will send copies of the petitions to NYCHA and HUD leadership demanding that their homes not be demolished.
The proposed redevelopment plan on publicly owned land purports to re-home NYCHA tenants from 24 buildings into six towers while uprooting an urban forest covering portions of six blocks. Of the new 5,500 units, 3,500 would be in market-rate/luxury towers, some as high as 39 stories, covering 70% of the land and reducing the public housing presence to only 30% of its current area.
Under the proposed plan, residents in the FEC NYCHA Houses (located between Ninth and Tenth Avenues, from 16th to 19th Streets, and 25th to 27th Streets) would live with construction debris, noise pollution, and multiple airborne toxins from building demolition and new construction for the duration of the project—which could span two decades—as will the residents and businesses throughout the surrounding neighborhood.
