What is the Hospital Homeless Count?

Every year, on the same night at the New York City Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE) count—the Health & Housing Consortium leads an independent count of people experiencing homelessness in NYC hospitals.

Why do we conduct the count?

HOPE excludes individuals who may be seeking care or shelter in hospital emergency departments. The Consortium’s count sheds light on the hidden homeless missed by the cities estimate. The survey helps build a comprehensive understanding and helps us to Advocate for proper resources to move people from the streets and hospitals to a more stable environment.

Where is the count held?

Public and private hospitals throughout the Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens participant in the count. The survey is conducted it in emergency department treatment areas, waiting rooms, hallways, lobbies, and chapels. We do not survey in-patient units.

How can we help?

Volunteer to conduct the 2022 hospital homeless count! The consortium relies on volunteers to help conduct account. No previous experience required. All surveyors must attend a one hour virtual training, be fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19, and wear N95 /KN95 mask for the duration of the count.
