James Baldwin Historic Plaque To Be Unveiled at 81 Horatio St.

(DNAINFO) Danielle Tcholakian — A historic plaque memorializing the residence of writer James Baldwin will be unveiled at 81 Horatio St. Wednesday night, courtesy of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation and local pizzeria Two Boots.

Two Boots and GVSHP have partnered to post historic plaques around the neighborhood since 2013. GVSHP called Wednesday night’s unveiling “a fitting coda” to the “Year of James Baldwin,” a celebration of the writer by a group of organizations that ended in June.

Baldwin lived at 81 Horatio St. in the late 1950s and early 1960s, “during one of his most prolific and creative periods,” according to GVSHP. The group credits “the Village scene” with influencing his writing and activism.
