Police fatally shot a knife-wielding man on a busy Manhattan street during Wednesday morning’s rush hour, officials said.

The 46-year-old man, whose name wasn’t immediately released, went into a Food Emporium at the corner of Eighth Avenue and West 49th Street about 8:30 a.m. to buy beer and became belligerent with a cashier inside, according to NYPD Chief of Department James O’Neill.

“He was swearing at the people in the store, toward the workers in the store,” O’Neill said.

The suspect then went outside where an officer, who had been posted at a Verizon workers strike a block north, saw him and tackled him to the ground, police said.

The suspect stood up clutching an eight-inch knife and advanced on police, refusing commands to drop the it, O’Neill said.
